Introduction
Kizomba is a new dance lesson taught here at Footloose. Our lessons will be focussed on the Urban Kizomba. At Kizomba, you dance with a dance partner. It is useful if you bring a dance partner yourself, but you can also find a dance partner at Footloose. For example at our DSTO evening, or during the first two weeks of the course.
The dance style
Kizomba is an African dance characterized by close partner connection and smooth, grounded movement. In Kizomba, there is no “basic step” after the fashion of ballroom dances, to be repeated continuously throughout the dance.
Urban Kizomba
A new style that originated primarily in France. It has been called French-style, evolution, new-style, urban, modern, etc. This style is danced to more electronic music, including ghetto zouk and remixes of pop, hip-hop, and house music. It is characterized by more linear movement, more frequent syncopation and breaks, and an upright stance.
Course progress
Kizomba 1 is for people who have no experience in partner dances. Kizomba 2 is fitted for people who already have experiences with Kizomba or have been dancing partner dances for a reasonable amount. If you are not sure what level you are, please come to the DSTO or join the open classes to try out the two levels.
Teacher – Gulsah van Dijk
The Kizomba classes are taught by Gulsah and her dance partner Romano.
