Improvisation

Introduction

Dance improvisation has no set steps, form or style. It stimulates the creativity and authentic movement of dancers of any style or background. Nothing is wrong, nothing is right. This is just a deep research in order to discover new possibilities of expressing through movement. Every dancer explores their own unique kind of movement and extends their body limits. We work with different tools/toys that are applicable to any dance style and leave a lot of freedom to explore your self-expression. Our goals are finding new games and qualities that we can add in our personal moving language. As a dancer you get the opportunity to diversify your dance technique and refine your sense of performance.

What does a class (session) look like?

Classes are 15+60 minutes long. We start with a warm-up, usually using different kinds of tools, such as natural elements, time and space in order to awaken the body, face and mind.
During the biggest part of the class we will work on different research methods to create movement and phrases based on contemporary dance techniques such as gaga, floorwork, dance theater, instant composition and authentic movement. We will work individually, in duo’s and with all of the dancers in the group. In the improvisation course we work towards (group)performances throughout the year. More specifically, in this class we will focus on 6 sections:
•4 elements
•Staccato – Legato movement
•Rhythm – tempo – speed
•Creation through passages
•Emotions – dancing face
•Creation of choreo
At the end of each session we finish with a short jam, a way to implement everything you learned during the class, connect with the other dancers and/or just dance it out.

For whom is this course?

Improvisation is for everyone who has some dance experience. As long as you have developed some body awareness, are comfortable exploring movement ( on your own as well as with others), and have a decent dance vocabulary, you are very welcome to join us. If you aren’t sure if you will fit in the course, feel free to contact us.
