Salsa

Introduction

Thanks to our professional dance teacher, fun salsa classes are provided. The teacher teaches the basic principles of salsa, bachata, and merengue with varied music at salsa 1, in which no prior knowledge of dancing is necessary. There will be an increasing emphasis on salsa. With salsa 2, 3 and 4, the learning of the figures is a bit faster. In almost every lesson a new figure is taught, while the previous figures are repeated. At salsa, you dance with a dance partner. It is useful if you bring a dance partner yourself, but you can also find a dance partner at Footloose. For example at our DSTO evening, or during the first two weeks of the course.

For the people who want to do more performances, we have also a Salsa demo team. For the demo team, we have demo team regulations. Please read this carefully before you enter the demo team course!

The dance style

Salsa is a very popular dance of Caribbean origin. In the past, only the “right forward” one was danced. But nowadays there are different ways to dance Salsa: on the first beat (on the one), on the second beat (the so-called New York style, closely related to the Mambo), on the three (many Antilleans dance on the 3), or the 4th beat (including the Son is danced on the 4th count). But all this with “left forward”.

Salsa is not a static style but emphasizes movement. This also means that there is no set order in which dancing takes place. The man leads and determines the figures on the basis of the music on the spot. A set of dance steps in a salsa dance is divided into 8 counts divided into two measures of four counts.

Course progress

In order to guarantee a good flow within the salsa courses, there are a number of conditions; For example, you must complete all courses, except for Salsa 1, twice for six months before moving on to the next level. Exceptions may be made in consultation with the teacher.

If you have some dance experience, discuss with the teacher to find the right level for you.
